Wu Enqi's Story
(By Shan Dan)

Story: Further educated in the Print Department of Advanced Art College

Under the influence of his father, Wu Enqi had engaged with the print creation and annual pictures creation; and also he had drawn the comic strip and illustrations. But he found that his ability was still not equal to his ambition, so he was eager to have the chance of further training. In 1982, he got the chance finally. He had been matriculated by the Print Department of the Central Art College. It was the place where his father learned before. During 1959 to 1962, when China was suffered three years' natural disaster, his father was chosen in as the youth national painter. His teachers were Li Hua, Gu Yuan, Huang Yongyu, who was the most famous artists at that time; and his classmates like Guang Jun, Chen Yadan are very famous now.

With big amount of workload, the learning was tense but exciting. Several academic lectures were held every week and the visits of foreign art terms were just like potluck. All of those were free opened for its students, which had greatly broadened Wu Enqi's sight. How divine the art is! During that period, he had learned to create prints. Every work had expressed his feeling and passion for art and his sentiment attached by his hometown--- the big grassland. The short learning had changed his conception of nature and society and his whole life.

    Story: Small Print Union

Back from the learning, he was full of enthusiasm about print creation. At that time, the "Jerrimumen Print" had high reputation of the whole country. He would catch every chance to improve his print level. For instance, if the Culture Bureau invited the artists from the central art college to give lectures, he would attend without doubt; if they organized to go to the pasturing area for gathering news, he would bring with camera and sketchbook for collecting materials. When back home, he would manage the drafts and draw to prints. More and more youth gathered around him for learning skills of print from him. He would patiently teach them all the skills he learned from the central art college. For example, from the print tools' selection to the moisture's master; from the paper's selection to the print plate's division, he would help and instruct earnestly or print out directly. In 1984, he organized the Small Jerrimumen Print Union, which aims to create the prints and bookplates and attend the domestic or international print communication activities. The establishment of this union had shocked the countrywide bookplate field, because several decades works came from our Small Print Union on behalf of China attending in the worldwide bookplate exhibition held in Tokyo for the first time. We became the earliest collective member of the China Bookplate Seminar Union. After that, in any international or domestic bookplate exhibitions could find our work. The small bookplate brought with the deep grass flavor to the domestic and foreign magazines and finally to the whole world. In 1986, six members of the Small Print Union had got the honor of "print world" issued by the People Art Publishing Company, they are: Wu Enqi, Shan Dan, Shao Chunguang, Gu Xinhua, Deriger, Liu Xiaodong. In 1987, the Jerrimumen Culture League had honored the Small Jerrimumen Print Union. As the representative, Uwan Qi went to the stage and received the diploma.

Story: the work "Grassland Overflowed with Fragrant"

Uwan Qi's print was massive and solid. He would never play with petty tricks. Every print he would amend for several times. He wanted to put his Mongolia national passion and his art soul into prints. When he sketched in grassland, he would deeply absorb the grass fragrant, carouse the kumiss with herds and sing Mongolia songs together. When he attended the Nadamu Party, he would be moved by the galloping horses, the undefiled lambs, strong Borker, and so on. In 1987, he was approved as the member of China Artist Association. His works in 80' of twenty century like "Roll the Felts", "Frail", "Snow Reflecting Motherliness", "Grassland Overflowed with Fragrant", ¡°"Old mother", "Field Notes", "Grass Soul", "Grass Morning Song", "Five Cavalier" were singing the grassland; his work in 90' of twenty century like 'Wrangler", "Sacrifice the Mongolia Tent", "Mongolia Wrestle", "Spring Call", "Frankincense", "Song on Horseback", "Feelings for the north", "Spring Festival for Mongol" were also praising grassland; his work "Feelings for the grassland" created in 2000 and the work "Beings on the grassland" and "Welkin" created in 2002 seemed to calling for green! The artist was using his pen, knife, ink and color to express his respect and attention to nature, who deeply loved the grass, life and society.

Wu Enqi had created about one hundred works totally; some of them were published, exhibited, or collected. Since 1980, his work could be found almost in all countrywide print exhibitions. Although he had not got the highest honor, he still had got the "China Print Exhibition Excellence Award", the "Sarina Second-class Award" issued by the Municipality Government, the "Municipality Art Exhibition Excellence Award", the "Print World" issued by the People Art Publishing Company. And in 1999, his work "Lu Xun Print" had got the Excellent Print Award of China 80' to 90'of twenty century. He would not forget the creating process of the print "Grassland Overflowed with Fragrant": with carved by flat knife, the work's color would become vivid gradually, which could make it solid and lively just like a relievo. In competition in the 9th print exhibition, the director of the Print Department of Advanced Art College Wu Biduan said, "this work is innovative and with thought in it, which is very larruping'. All the works created by Wu Enqi were related to grass. The work "Grassland Overflowed with Fragrant" was his dream. He hoped that green, peace, natural balance and the scenery of mastic flowing could stay permanently.

Story: become the chairman of the Artist Association

At the end of last century, Wu Enqi was chosen to be the vice chairman of the Jerrimumen Union Artist Association. He found his responsibility became heavier. The artist association in Tongliao City had a good basic in art. There were many works had sent to attend the exhibition and got several awards. There were also many famous painters. But now, arts had no market here, and painters should buy the pens or paper with own salary. The high cost made the print creation shrunk. So the print industry was plunged on the verge of destruction in Tongliao, which was considered as the "print hometown" before. Wu Enqi decided to salve the Jerrimu Print. In 2001, he organized the "Jerrimu Print Exhibition"; in 2002, he launched the print creation upsurge of all districts with the association's members and held the "Jerrimu New Print Exhibition"; in 2003, he had improved the Print Exhibition with Tianjin Tanggu and the Art Communication Exhibition with Korea; he edit the "Kerqing Prints"and published with the help of his friends.

The members of Artist Association in Tongliao City were united together. They always gathered together---talking, drinking and singing. It was also a way of showing the spirit of print. Wu Enqi felt very satisfied and successful. His biggest wish was to hold his own print exhibition in suitable time, and to walk around everywhere of our country and the whole world to appreciate the natural art favored by heaven.
