Dream of Printmaking
(By Shan Dan)

I think it is the lot so that it can be realized!

When I entered the primary school, it was the time of "learning Leifeng". All the awards we got were the paper imprinted on Leifeng Image, which always still had the smell of ink. Later, we knew it was the print, with straight and powerful lines and strong contrast of white and black, which was always looked better than any other color printed propagandizing paper hung on the wall. During the institutional revolution, I saw our teacher carving the print of "Ma, En, Lie, Si & Mao". The knives with round neb, trigonal neb and diagonal neb were moved on the red veneer. The white wood powers were fluttering like a lightsome march. I touched the knives secretly with the thought of carving one in future. At that time, I was twelve years old. When I entered the middle common school, I had contacted with the print for second time. The Union Culture Bureau wanted to publish a print collection "Jerrimu Print Omnibus". Because the big amount of workload, the Bureau needed to find several students to help. I was very lucky to be chosen. However, we could not use knives but only using wood mushroom for instead. The process was very dull, but I was finally familiar with the whole producing process. Several hundreds of white paper became to colorful print and then were made to Print Omnibus.

The first time I picked up the print knife was in 80's. In 1982, I went to Beijing to visit the Hang Mo Print Collection Exhibition. During that exhibition, I had saw many things for the first time, such as: the print work created by Li Hua, Gu Yuan, Wang Qi, and Liang Dong; various of printing machines in studio; students' exercises in corridor and the "Japanese Children Print Exhibition" in display museum of the Central Art College. After seeing so many new things, the creation desire suddenly came into my mind. From then on, I had created some work and several of that had been published in local newspaper. In 1983, my first watermark print "My Home" had been collected in China Art Museum with Jerrimu Prints together and the work "Breeding Flower" was collected by China Exhibition Organizing Company. I was the art teacher of a middle common school. At that time, I had many students. I had tried my best to impart my immature skills to them. Their work were exhibited in China Art Museum, China Children Activity Center. Our Mongolia children had showed their ideal to the whole world, which was also myself dream during my childhood. I truly realized my dream during the year that I was learning in the Print Department of Central Art College. I had met the famous print artist such as Li Hua, Gu Yuan, Wang Qi, And Li Pingfan and learned from the print professors such as Liang Dong, Song Yuanwen, Guang Jun, Wu Changjiang and so on. I had formally learned the skills of woodcarving, copperplate and silkscreen and so on. At the middle time of 80', the literature and art field in our country was shocked by the wave of reforming and opening, and my conception had changed along with it. After visiting the Lawsonbert's exhibition, appreciating the Picasso's painting volume and researching the Dong Fangzhi's direct print, I had brought in much enthusiasm and inspiration from those. I can still remember clearly that during the first learning step, I had done exercise on the black & white woodcarving for 7 weeks. During that period, I had created about 50 pieces of work totally at a draught. And back from the learning, I had not stopped creating. My print dream had realized by my students. Although I had not created a distinguished work, I still tried my best to draw and carve. In 1998, in the exhibition of "Shandan Print Exhibition" held in China Art Museum, I had exhibited 30 prints and two of those were collected in China Art Museum. Besides, I was living in the area that owned excellent print tradition all along and got the care and help from the artists of the old generation. I think it is the lot.
